Today is the official DVD release of a great documentary of a company and time I’m proud to have been involved with. Joffrey: Mavericks of American Dance was directed by Bob Hercules and tells the story of the Joffrey Ballet Company’s beginning and impact.
I first saw the film earlier this year at its New York premiere and later joined a Q&A panel at its screening at the Sarasota Film Festival this past April. While many individuals are still around to discuss the artistry and working of Robert Joffrey and the company, I discovered I was in a unique position to share the inner financial workings and challenges of the company. In addition, this allowed me to challenge the familiar narrative that someone of Joffrey’s artistry wasn’t and couldn’t be a good businessman. If you’re interested, more about this is available on the film’s blog and my interview on the Joffrey Maverick Memories podcast (Podcast #24).
