Code of Ethics

Our researchers and vendors balance the needs of our clients to collect, analyze, record, maintain, use and disseminate information with an individual’s right to privacy. YoungAssociates marketing and fundraising consultancy builds on the following principles:

  1. Fundamental Principles.
    1. Confidentiality. Confidential information about constituents (donors and non-donors), as well as confidential information of the institution divulged in conversation, in print or electronically are protected so the relationship of trust between the constituent and the client is upheld.
    2. Accuracy. Prospect research and feasibility studies record all data. Such information includes attribution. Analysis and products of data analysis are assigned without personal prejudices or biases. Public reports remove attribution to protect confidentiality.
    3. Relevance. YoungAssociates seeks and records only information that is relevant and appropriate to the fundraising or market analysis of the client.
    4. Accountability. YoungAssociates accept responsibility for our actions and are accountable to the profession of development, to our respective clients and to the constituents who place their trust in research and analysis.
    5. Honesty. YoungAssociates is truthful with regard to our identity and purpose and the identity of our client during the course of our work.
  2. Our Research & Data Management Protocol
    1. Collection.
      1. The collection of information is done lawfully, respecting applicable laws and client internal policies.
      2. Information sought and recorded includes all data that can be verified and attributed, as well as constituent information that is self-reported (eg, via correspondence, surveys, questionnaires, face-to-face interviews).
      3. When requesting information in person or by telephone, client identity is public. Written requests for public information are made using the client’s letterhead.
      4. Whenever possible, payments for public records are made through the client.
      5. YoungAssociates applies the same standards for electronic information that we currently use in evaluating and verifying print media. We are steadfast in ascertaining whether the information comes from a reliable source.
    2. Recording & Maintenance.
      1. YoungAssociates states information in an objective and factual manner; noting attribution and date of collection.
      2. Constituent information on paper, electronic or other media is stored securely to prevent access by unauthorized persons.
      3. Special protection is applied to all giving records pertaining to anonymous donors.
      4. Electronic or paper documents pertaining to constituents shall be irreversibly disposed of when no longer needed by shredding the documents.
    3. Use & Distribution.
      1. Constituent information is the property of the client and is not given to persons other than those involved with the cultivation or solicitation effort or those who need that information in the performance of their duties for that specific client.
      2. Constituent information for one client is not taken to another client.
      3. Research and solicitation briefing documents containing constituent information that is to be used outside YoungAssociates offices are always marked as confidential.
      4. Data management vendors, consultants and other third party external entities understand and agree to comply with YoungAssociates confidentiality policies before gaining access to client data.
      5. YoungAssociates recommends to all clients that only publicly available information be shared with colleagues at other institutions as a professional courtesy.
      6. YoungAssociates requires wealth rating content to be strictly limited solely and exclusively for the use of the client. We prohibit by client agreement that such content may not be swapped, sold, or transferred.
  3. Client Recommendation.
YoungAssociates urge our clients to develop written policies based upon applicable laws and, within these policies, define what information shall be gathered, recorded and maintained and to whom and under what conditions the information can be released.
